Get out there and walk - for you and others

Just Walk, initiated by the British Heart Foundation, is a simple and easy way to raise funds for life-saving heart and circulatory disease research. All you need to do is sign up to Just Walk, decide when and where you want to walk, and then get fundraising.

Being active is good for you in all sorts of ways - no matter your age. And no matter how busy you are or where you live in the UK, you should be able to take a walk.

Walking helps reduce your risk of developing heart or circulatory conditions, having a stroke, getting type-2 diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis. You will also:

  • Feel more energetic
  • Get a healthier body shape and appearance
  • Control your weight and increase your self confidence
  • Feel less stressed and sleep more easily
  • Enjoy your surroundings
  • Meet people and make new friends, e.g. through walking groups
  • Save money (and the environment) by not using the car or public transport so often.

The BHF has put together some great ideas for walks including:

  • Canal walks
  • Old railway line walks
  • Long-distance walks
  • Woodland walks
  • Winter wonderland walks
  • Joining a walking group - it can give you the kick-start you need to get active.¬†Find a walking group
  • Using a free walking app
  • Some different ways to walk such as walking football, walking basketball, Nordic walking, orienteering, walking rugby, geocaching (great fun), race walking and city walking. And, our perennial favourite‚Ķdog walking.

Or, you could join with colleagues at work at lunchtime or compete in teams to see who walks the furthest.

You can pick the route to make the challenge suit you. You can choose the date and time as it works for all ages and levels of fitness. You can walk on your own or get together with friends, family or colleagues. You can help save lives with your fundraising.
